Emergency Relief Provided to Flood-Affected Families
The trust provided emergency relief including food, clean water, and temporary shelter to families affected by recent flooding in low-lying areas of Vasai. The unexpected heavy rains in early March caused significant flooding in several villages, displacing over 50 families and damaging homes and belongings.
Our emergency response team, led by Ms. Lakshmi Menon, mobilized within hours of receiving reports about the flooding. The team set up a relief camp at the local school, providing immediate shelter to displaced families. Over the next three days, we distributed essential supplies including:
- Ready-to-eat food packets and drinking water
- Blankets and clothing
- Basic medical supplies and first aid
- Hygiene kits with soap, sanitizer, and menstrual products
Special attention was given to vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, young children, and elderly individuals. Our volunteer medical team conducted health check-ups to prevent waterborne diseases, which are common after flooding events.
"The immediate response from Vasai Human Care Trust was crucial for our community," said Ramesh Patil, a village elder. "Many families lost everything in the floods, and the support provided gave them hope during this difficult time."
Beyond immediate relief, the trust is now working with affected families on recovery efforts. This includes cleaning and disinfecting homes once water levels recede, repairing damaged structures, and replacing essential household items. We are also coordinating with local authorities to improve drainage systems in these areas to prevent future flooding.
This emergency response was made possible through the generous support of our donors who contributed to our emergency relief fund. We are grateful to local businesses that donated supplies and to the school authorities for providing space for the relief camp.
The trust remains committed to supporting these families until they can fully recover from this disaster. We are also developing a more comprehensive disaster preparedness plan for vulnerable communities in the Vasai region.
